The story of Pilates began not in a boutique studio, but in the confines of an internment camp during WWI. Joseph Pilates developed his method (originally called Contrology) as a way to rehabilitate himself and his fellow detainees. A love letter to the muscle that never skips a beat 💌 Your heart works 24/7, so we’re giving it a little help. Did you know Pilates helps your heart “work smarter, not harder”? 🤍 Activating the “Second Heart”: The calf muscles are often referred to as the body’s “second heart” because their contraction squeezes the deep veins in the lower legs, pushing deoxygenated blood upward against gravity. By pushing against the resistance of the reformer springs, you force your calf muscles to contract and relax, which significantly increases venous return (blood flow back to the heart). 🤍The Signal: This deep, controlled, and rhythmic breath signals the brain to reduce the production of stress hormones (cortisol) and increase “feel-good” hormones. 🤍 Regular Pilates training has been shown to reduce systemic arterial stiffness. This means the arteries become more flexible and elastic. 🤍 Pilates often uses a “purse-lip” exhalation to completely expel stale air and carbon dioxide. This deep exhalation forces the diaphragm to work more efficiently and reduces pressure on the heart.
